I have! They’re both excellent films with very different emotional performances.
aren’t they though?? Ugh. I’m so conflicted, mostly because Iron Lady was so strange but Meryl was so fucking brilliant I could die, and Albert Nobbs was a slower pace than Iron Lady but Glenn just wowed me and left me speechless. :’( this is horrible.
The way I see it both were incredible performances. Glenn’s was a movie about a character you didn’t know and desperately craved to know more, to feel more. You’re drawn in from all that you don’t know, and those tiny glimpses of thewoman beneath that you want to know. You want to fall in love with her, just to see Albert smile. You want Albert to be happy.
Meryl’s portrayal of Maggie though is totally different performance. It’s about a person we (well, mostly all of us) claim to know, and more importantly claim to hold the correct opinion about. It’s a film which will leave many bewildered because of the total lack of political commentary, which will equally annoy many too. It’s a woman many would rather push away, and yet you are slowly drawn in by realising the similarities that we all share, the commonalities we all hold dear, and the experiences although unique, many still know and understand. You may not feel for Margaret, but you definitely learn something about Alzheimer’s/Dementia which is incredibly important, especially when we live in an ageing world.
The way I see it, and I consider the same to be true for The Help (which I have also seen - and also wish could win too), that each film has its strengths and weaknesses, each film we will all love individually, and we all love and respect the leading ladies. So if any of them win, I’ll be happy. Viola too, and despite my reservations about the film, it’s not often enough we see talented black women starring in a mainstream film, let alone get nominated for their performances in them.
Don’t feel conflicted, love them all, and celebrate with the knowledge each performance was remarkable, and if either Glenn or Meryl (or Viola) win (I don’t count the other two, I haven’t seen, and honestly do not care for their films), win that they’ve made us all proud!
:D
Now, let’s just hope one of them wins!
